Japanese Breakfast – The Melancholy Tour with Hand Habits

Start

Pioneertown’s iconic desert venue Pappy & Harriet’s will host two of indie music’s most compelling voices this summer, as Japanese Breakfast and Hand Habits take the stage on August 21—on their respective tours.

Japanese Breakfast’s Return: The Melancholy Tour

After a three-year hiatus from touring, Japanese Breakfast—the acclaimed project of Michelle Zauner—returns with The Melancholy Tour, supporting her new album For Melancholy Brunettes (& sad women). Released this past spring, the record has already earned critical acclaim, landing on Best of 2024 So Far lists from AV Club, Billboard, and Harper’s Bazaar.

Produced by Grammy Award-winner Blake Mills, Melancholy Brunette is a more introspective and mature departure from the bright optimism of 2021’s Jubilee. Zauner explores the rich emotional terrain of sadness and self-reflection, crafting what The Philadelphia Inquirer described as “a lush, artful set of songs… brought to life in a presentation that was both whimsical and marked by impressive subtlety and sophistication.”

Hand Habits Debuts New Work: Blue Reminder

Sharing the stage that evening is Hand Habits, the musical moniker of multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Meg Duffy. Duffy’s highly anticipated album Blue Reminder is out August 22 via Fat Possum Records, and this intimate Pappy’s show will be a celebration of its release.

Described as a tender balancing act between joy and quiet anxiety, Blue Reminder explores vulnerability, self-actualization, and the challenge of staying open in love. “For this record, I set out to no longer shapeshift when it came to the person I become in the face of love,” Duffy shares.

The album was recorded in Los Angeles with co-producer Joseph Lorge, and features collaborators like Olivia Kaplan, Blake Mills, and members of SML. It was tracked largely live—capturing the raw energy Duffy has honed while touring over the last decade, including stints with Perfume Genius.
