Print isn’t just a medium for Shepard Fairey—it’s a movement. This fall, BEYOND THE STREETS presents SHEPARD FAIREY: OUT OF PRINT, a landmark exhibition that dives deep into the artist’s lifelong relationship with printmaking and the enduring influence of mass communication on contemporary culture.
Bringing together more than 400 original screen prints, alongside new and re-mixed works that merge screen printing with stenciling, OUT OF PRINT offers a sweeping look at Fairey’s evolution over the past three and a half decades. From early underground interventions to globally recognized cultural icons, the exhibition charts a visual history rooted in rebellion, accessibility, and bold graphic language.

“I’m a product of the era of mass production, and the mass culture printing has created,” says Fairey. “I can’t imagine my art practice without the influence of, and the use of, printing.” Influenced not by traditional painting but by posters, album covers, skateboard graphics, punk flyers, and T-shirt designs, Fairey credits print with democratizing art—allowing messages to live in public spaces while remaining affordable through multiples.
The exhibition highlights Fairey’s mastery of the visual codes of advertising and propaganda, reworking them to both captivate and challenge the viewer. His reproducible images—seen on walls, storefronts, and wardrobes around the world—function as civic dialogue, cultural memory, and political provocation, underscoring the power of art to engage the public beyond gallery walls.
Alongside rare and historic editions, OUT OF PRINT debuts a focused series of hybrid works, where layered stencils, paper, and ink collide. These new pieces expand Fairey’s print vocabulary while staying true to the immediacy and urgency of street art. Archival materials and process ephemera further enrich the exhibition, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the artist’s methods and influences.

“OUT OF PRINT brings together the spirit of the street and the discipline of the studio,” notes BEYOND THE STREETS Director Dante Parel. “It’s an opportunity to experience the breadth of Shepard’s print practice in one sweep—from the subcultural pulse that shaped him to the images that helped shape public imagination.”
In an era dominated by digital media, Fairey remains adamant about the relevance of print. “Some people say digital media has ended print,” he says, “but the provocative, tactile experience of a print on a wall or in the wild—can’t be replaced. Printing still matters!”
SHEPARD FAIREY: OUT OF PRINT is on view at BEYOND THE STREETS through January 11, 2026, offering a timely reminder of the enduring power of ink, paper, and message.
