Athena Gyro

A Taste of Greece in the Coachella Valley
Start

When Alper “Al” first stepped off the plane in 2008, leaving behind the familiar rhythms of New York and New Jersey, he thought he was bound for San Diego. Instead, he landed in the Coachella Valley—on a blistering August afternoon. “My first day here was 125 degrees,” he recalls with a laugh. “I’ll never forget that day. But you grow, you acclimate, you adapt—and I love it here. I still think it’s one of the most beautiful places in California, especially in the winter months.”

That unexpected move planted the seed for what would become Athena Gyro, Palm Desert’s beloved Greek restaurant. In 2016, Al opened the doors to his first business, eager for the valley to embrace his cuisine and his vision of Mediterranean flavors and culture. Nearly a decade later, Athena Gyro has grown into the Coachella Valley’s premier destination for authentic Greek food—a restaurant now synonymous with fresh flavors, warm hospitality, and community connection.

From Family Kitchen to Local Favorite
Food wasn’t just nourishment—it was part of his identity. “Growing up with this culture, it’s been like a staple in my house,” he says. “I noticed out here in the valley, there weren’t too many spots for Mediterranean or Greek or Turkish food. So I thought to myself, ‘Hey, I can do this.’”

Although he worked at Italian restaurants along the way, Al never went to culinary school. Instead, he leaned on years of home cooking and a deep connection to his heritage. “I’m a self-taught chef. I didn’t go to school to be a chef—I actually went to school for business management and marketing. But I always wanted my own business. Back in 2016, I finally put every last penny into opening Athena Gyro. It was definitely a risk, but the community showed great support.”

That gamble paid off. Since opening its doors, Athena Gyro has been voted Best Greek Restaurant in the Desert Sun every year since 2020. For Al, that recognition is both humbling and motivating. “It’s community-voted, so it means a lot. I try to keep it consistent and also introduce new specials—it’s been working so far. Knock on wood.”

Authentic Flavors with a Twist
The foundation of Athena Gyro lies in its balance of tradition and creativity. Many recipes come directly from family meals, while others carry Al’s personal touch. “Everything is stuff that I’ve grown up eating, and I put my own take and twist on it,” he explains. “I try to stay true to the authentic dishes and recipes, but sometimes I’ll change variations suited more for my liking.”

His branzino dish, for example, pays homage to childhood memories. “My uncle made a really good branzino—it was light, lemony, just a very good fish. I loved the way he prepared it. I wanted to bring that here, and now it’s a special on my menu.”

At the same time, Al embraces the Valley’s diverse culinary influences. “Recently I added a Greek chicken taco to the menu, and that’s been a successful hit. I’ll play to the roots of authentic Greek or Turkish dishes, but also adapt some Latin flavors, like spicy salsa. It keeps things fresh.”

Of course, there are certain classics that need no reinvention. “The gyro sandwich would probably be the number one menu item that represents us,” he says. “You can’t go wrong with it. We also do Greek meatballs, chicken kebabs, falafel, and lamb—which is a staple of Greek food.”

More Than a Meal
Owning and operating Athena Gyro isn’t just about food. It’s about atmosphere and connection. “When someone walks in for the first time, I want them to feel love, charm, authenticity,” he says. “It all starts with service. As soon as you enter the door, my staff welcomes you in with a smile, recommends dishes, checks in—it’s those little things that make people want to come back.”

The restaurant’s name itself reflects his philosophy. “Athena is the Greek goddess of wisdom, knowledge, and strategy. She symbolizes something I aspire to be—wise, strategic, strong. That’s what I want for my business, too.”

Over the years, Athena Gyro has become a place of discovery for many. “I have a lot of guests who say, ‘I’ve never had Greek food—what do you recommend?’ And funny enough, they come multiple times in the week. They’ll say, ‘We loved it so much, we want to try something else.’ So I’ve been able to expand people’s horizons a bit.”

Lessons Learned and What’s Next
Running a restaurant has taught Al more than just recipes. “Atmosphere, service, consistency, food quality and presentation—that all matters. You can have the best food in the world, but if your service isn’t great, you have nothing. It’s all part of it.”

Consistency, in fact, is the word he comes back to again and again. “Consistency across the board—how things are prepped, plating, fresh produce, service. That’s the hardest thing, but it’s also the most important.”

Looking ahead, Al hints at more to come. “I always try to incorporate specials every few months—my next one might be garlic roast chicken with lemon Greek potatoes. And hopefully I can get another restaurant someday, which would be my ultimate goal.” With Athena Gyro’s tenth anniversary on the horizon, a celebration is already on his mind. “I might throw a little party. Some Greek music, maybe even a belly dancer—it’ll be nice.”

A Legacy Built on Passion
At the end of the day, Al says his passion keeps him moving forward. “You’ve got to have love for what you do, no matter what it is. For me, it’s also the creative aspect—getting my hands and mind into a dish, that process really excites me.”

He sees his restaurant as more than a business—it’s a form of art. “Having your creation appreciated—that’s what I love most about being a business owner. That’s what makes it worth it.”

And for those dreaming of following in his footsteps? His advice is simple: “There are going to be ups and downs, of course. But consistency, patience, and a positive attitude really go a long way.”

Fresh. Authentic. Delicious. Those are the three words Al uses to describe Athena Gyro—and after nearly a decade of winning hearts (and stomachs) in the Coachella Valley, it’s safe to say the community agrees.
