King Pleasure presented by the family of Jean-Michel Basquiat

On display at The Grand LA, King Pleasure© presents a unique journey through the life and artistry of Jean-Michel Basquiat, as seen through the eyes of his family. The exhibit transcends the traditional gallery experience, offering a deeply personal perspective on the celebrated artist’s work and the profound impact he had on the art world.

The exhibit is divided into four separate immersive spaces with over 200 never-before-seen and rarely shown paintings, drawings, multimedia presentations, ephemera, and artifacts tell the story of Jean-Michel from an intimate perspective and the times in which he lived.

As you step inside, you are immediately enveloped by the vibrant energy that defined Basquiat’s creations. The walls come alive with his bold brushstrokes, intricate symbols, and poignant messages that echo the rich tapestry of his life. However, this exhibit goes beyond showcasing his artistic prowess; it provides a glimpse into Basquiat’s inner world, shaped by his love for Black heroes and his unwavering passion for social justice.

Throughout the exhibit, the influence of jazz musicians, singers, and sports icons becomes evident. Basquiat’s admiration for their artistry and the strength they embodied shines through his colorful depictions. In his paintings, the likes of Charlie Parker, Nat King Cole and Grace Jones come to life, immortalized in vibrant hues that pay homage to their legacy.

Moreover, Basquiat’s unwavering commitment to social justice reverberates throughout the exhibition. He used his art as a platform to raise awareness about racial inequality, economic disparity, and the struggles faced by marginalized communities. His work speaks volumes, challenging societal norms and shedding light on the realities that often go unnoticed. Basquiat’s distinctive crown motif, a symbol of power and empowerment, adorns many of his pieces, serving as a reminder of the strength and resilience of Black individuals in the face of adversity.

But what truly sets the King Pleasure exhibit apart is the perspective it offers—through the lens of Basquiat’s family. It is a testament to their unwavering support and love for the artist, revealing the intimate stories and personal anecdotes that shaped his artistic journey. From childhood memories to shared experiences, this exhibition paints a vivid portrait allowing visitors to connect with his art on a deeper level.

As you explore the exhibit, take a moment to soak in the profound impact of Basquiat’s work. Reflect on his audacious creativity, his unapologetic self-expression, and his relentless pursuit of justice. Allow his art to ignite conversations, to challenge preconceived notions, and to inspire a renewed dedication to social change.

Jean-Michel Basquiat: King Pleasure is more than an exhibit—it is a celebration of a visionary artist who defied convention and left an indelible mark on the world. It is an invitation to dive into Basquiat’s extraordinary universe, one filled with passion, talent, and a profound love for Black heroes and the pursuit of equality.  King Pleasure offers visitors a unique up close opportunity to view the artistry and compelling stories that bring Basquiat’s legacy to life.
