For more than a decade, Ryan Güt has been a driving rhythmic force behind some of the most respected names in the desert rock scene. Best known for his work alongside Brant Bjork, Nick Oliveri, and Mario Lalli — as well as his role as a founding member of Stöner — Güt has built an international reputation for his loose yet powerful groove behind the drums. Now, the longtime percussionist is stepping into a new creative chapter with the release of his debut solo album, The Shastafarian, arriving May 23, 2026.
Recorded at Church Studios in the Coachella Valley alongside engineer and co-producer Brian Moore, the album marks Güt’s emergence as a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, songwriter, and producer. In a notable feat, Güt performed every instrument heard on the record himself, transforming years of ideas, sketches, and lived experiences into a cohesive full-length project.

“I had material I’d been writing for over 10 years, plus a lifetime of collecting and experiencing music,” Güt shared. “It took a few life-changing events and doors opening to make it happen. I couldn’t have made this record a year ago, even if I wanted to.”
Fans familiar with Güt’s drumming work will recognize the sun-baked grooves and hypnotic rhythms that helped define modern desert rock, but The Shastafarian stretches beyond genre expectations. The album blends psychedelic textures, classic rock influences, jazz-inspired passages, and heavy tonal shifts into a deeply personal listening experience.
Throughout his career, Güt has toured extensively across North America, South America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan, appearing on acclaimed releases including totally… and Hittin’ the Bitchin’ Switch with Stöner, Folklore From the Other Desert Cities with Mario Lalli & the Rubber Snake Charmers, and Tao of the Devil and Once Upon A Time In The Desert with Brant Bjork. He has also shared stages with legendary heavy rock acts including Clutch, Corrosion of Conformity, and Melvins.

Thematically, The Shastafarian explores transformation, identity, and place, reflecting Güt’s personal journey between Mount Shasta and the Coachella Valley — two regions that have heavily influenced his artistic path. Rather than polish away imperfections, Güt intentionally embraced spontaneity in the recording process, allowing the album to retain a raw, human quality inspired by the classic records he grew up listening to.
“The element of human imperfection is important in art,” Güt explained. “If everything is made perfect, it loses that sense of this is real and happening now, and I wanted that to translate to the performance on the record.”
Designed to be experienced as a complete body of work, The Shastafarian encourages listeners to immerse themselves in the album from beginning to end, particularly on vinyl. Güt personally handcrafted the gatefold artwork and insert as an extension of the listening experience, inviting audiences to slow down, engage with the visuals, and take the musical journey in full.
To celebrate the release, an intimate listening party will take place from 2–4 p.m. on Saturday, May 23, at Rosemary Hi-Fi in Indio. Vinyl and digital editions of the album will be available through Bandcamp under “The Shastafarian.”
