Albert Frey (American, born Switzerland, 1903-1998) helped to establish Palm Springs as a world-recognized center for modern architecture and design. He was the first architect to design a modern International Style structure for Palm Springs and paved the way for modern architecture and the architects that followed. Steeped in early European modernism, Frey's adroit handling of low-cost and low-maintenance industrial materials, sublime desert color combinations, and appealing geometric compositions give him a unique and permanent place in the idiom of "desert modernism" and succinctly expressed his two greatest loves—nature and architecture.

Judithe Hernández | Beyond Myself, Somewhere, I Wait for My Arrival spans over 50 years of this groundbreaking artist’s career. It is the first major retrospective of her work, which centers the realities and mythologies of Mexican migrant women, exploring the legacies of colonization and the US Mexico border and their impact on women and children. This exhibition features over 80 works from her Adam & Eve; Juárez, México; and Colonization series. It also includes a video chronicling the artist’s early career in muralism and her critical conceptual contributions as the first featured cover artist of Aztlán: A Journal of Chicano Studies. Slated for release

Before You Now: Capturing the Self in Portraiture focuses on the enduring theme of the artist’s self-portrait, as seen in a selection of works from LACMA’s collections of photographs, prints, drawings, videos, and installation art. Primarily featuring contemporary makers, the exhibition is an introduction to seeing American artists as they see themselves—or as they want to be seen by their public.

The Broad is pleased to announce the launch of a new touring special exhibition Mickalene Thomas: All About Love, running from May 25 to September 29, 2024. Co-organized by the Hayward Gallery, London, and The Broad, Los Angeles, and in partnership with the Barnes Foundation, Philadelphia, Mickalene Thomas: All About Love will be the first major international tour of this pioneering artist’s work.
